During my internship at Toro, I was asked to create some prototype cover designs for service manuals. I am the first to admit that I’m not a graphic designer, but I did my best. Creating these covers allowed me to expand my skills using both Photoshop and InDesign. The main challenges I encountered were uncertainty about expectations, and my lack of design expertise.
I overcame the uncertainty about expectations by reviewing previous designs, and creating designs that were thematically similar, but with my own personal flair. Specifically, I used the same color palette and varied the text. I offset my lack of design expertise by showing drafts of my designs to the department graphic designer, and utilized her knowledge to improve my work product.
